PATRON: The Baroness Neuberger of Primrose Hill DBE



Was educated at Newnham College, Cambridge and Leo Baeck College, London. She became a rabbi in 1977, and served the South London Liberal Synagogue for twelve years, before going to the King’s Fund Institute as a Visiting Fellow, to work on research ethics committees in the United Kingdom. She then became a fellow at Harvard Medical School in 1991-1992, having gone to the United States on a Harkness Fellowship. In November 1997 she became Chief Executive of the King’s Fund, an independent health charity, until January 2004. She was a member of the Committee on Standards in Public Life (the Wicks Committee) until April 2004, is currently a Trustee of the Imperial War Museum and of the British Council, as well as of the Booker Prize Foundation.


Lady Neuberger has been a member of the General Medical Council, the Medical Research Council, a trustee of the Runnymede Trust and a member of the Board of Visitors of Memorial Church, Harvard University. She was a Civil Service Commissioner from 2001-2002. She holds honorary doctorates from ten universities, is an honorary fellow of Mansfield College, Oxford, and was Chancellor of the University of Ulster from 1994 - 2000. She also became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in July 2004. She is also the author of several books on Judaism, women, healthcare ethics and on caring for dying people. She broadcasts frequently, and writes articles on a variety of subjects.


Julia was created a Liberal Democrat Life Peer in June 2004. In her spare time she likes swimming, gardening, family life, opera and Irish life.


PATRON: Maureen Lipman CBE


Was born in Hull and educated at RADA. Well known as an actor, author and columnist. Maureen has appeared on film, television, on stage and radio. She has published several volumes of autobiography. However to many people, Maureen Lipman is best known as Beattie from the British Telecom advertisements which won her an award for "You got an Ology?"


Appointed CBE in 1999, Maureen was nominated for a 2004 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Musical of 2003 for her performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie performed at the Shaftesbury Theatre (and also on Broadway) in London's West End. She has also appeared in successful shows as Joyce Grenfell in "Re-Joyce" and as the vocally-challenged singer Florence Foster Jenkins in "Glorious", which also enjoyed a long West End run.


Maureen is a well-known face on television, including starring roles in "Agony", "Coronation Street" and has most recently appeared in "Dr Who" and in "Ladies of Letters".Maureen has been a champion for bereaved people following the death in 2004 of her husband, the playright Jack Rosenthal CBE



PATRON: Denise Robertson MBE




Denise is well-known to millions of TV viewers as the ‘agony aunt’ of ITV’s This Morning, a role she has fulfilled for over twenty years. She has used her knowledge and personal experience of grief and loss to help thousands of people. She has also travelled and lectured widely raising the profile of many diseases, including HIV/AIDs


Denise is also a published author with over forty novels to her credit. She has also written extensively for a range of national journals, newspapers, and magazines.


Denise, who was in 2006 awarded the MBE in recognition of her highly respected work, is also Patron of many charities and organisations, including the Society of Bereavement Practitioners.





PATRONS: Mary Tomes &  Kevin Tomes




Mary and Kevin Tomes are founders and directors of Oxfordshire-based Colourful Coffins, recognised as the market leader for personalised and bespoke picture coffins in the UK and overseas.


Since Colourful Coffins was launched in 2004, they have continued to lead the field in innovation, quality and personal service, helping thousands of families celebrate the life of their loved one in a unique and special way, enabling them to move forward in the grief journey. Mary Tomes was awarded the inaugural Gaia Award at the prestigious NatWest Every Woman Awards 2010.




PRESIDENT: Rev George Callander FRSA


George is a founder member of SBP. He trained at Worcester Royal Infirmary and at Warwick, Hertfordshire and London Universities. He is an accredited counsellor, registered nurse and ordained minister. He has specialised in bereavement care since 1995, providing support to countless families and individuals in hospitals - where he co-ordinated the bereavement care group in a major London teaching hospital A&E department, in primary care, private practice and extensively as a minister.



George specialises in working with bereaved parents and people bereaved by sudden or traumatic death. In 2004 he received an award of merit in the Registered Nurse category of the London Evening Standard/KIng’s Fund NHS Champions Awards.


George, who is a Freeman of the City of London, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, has many hobbies and interests. He has enjoyed singing since he was a cathedral chorister as a boy - and currently sings tenor with the chamber choir Cappella Novacastriensis. He enjoys architecture, Coronation Street, Radio Four and lives in the Durham countryside with his partner and their five moggies.



VICE - PRESIDENT: Keith Munt


Keith is a Partner and Company Director of Saint & Forster Funeral Directors Ltd. He has 15 years experience of working in the funeral service in the Darlington area. Keith entered the profession because he wanted to be able to make a real difference to people at one of the most difficult times in their lives and at Saint and Forster he believes that he has found the perfect opportunity to make his vision into a reality.


Keith's hobbies are many and varied. They include growing rare and exotic plants, collecting curiosities and exploring castles, stately homes and heritage sites. He also enjoys old films, particularly in the company of his partner Jenny's cats (and her, of course!)

 

He is proud to serve as Vice President of SBP, helping to uphold and encourage the excellent     bereavement care to which everyone should be entitled.
